Gladiators 101

So many people just gawk at me when I pull out my gladiator heels. Multiple mixes of emotion from "WOW YOU LOOK SO AWESOME" to the infamous boyfriend's reaction of "Hey there Leonidas" (and then me yelling "THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAA!").

All jokes aside, I do get asked a lot for tips on how to wear gladiators. And during the past two years that these have been in my closet, I've managed to find a few ways to style them--all with completely different vibes from each other.

Here are four different outfits that are friendly for almost all body shapes and sizes.

1) The Sultry Rocker:

I wore a similar outfit to this the first trip I took with my boyfriend. Key here? TUCK IN YOUR TOP! And then maybe add on an edgy belt if you're going for a simpler top or kimono, but if you have small lace detailing on the top and kimono, then you balance out the edgy vibe of the gladiator sandals. Denim shorts are a good top off to looking more casual and edgy. The sultriness of the kimono and a lace trimmed cami paired with an edgier high-waisted denim shorts and black caged gladiator heels balance each other out.

2) The Trendsetter (aka Kylie Inspired):

If you're feeling yourself and you're not afraid to admit that Kylie Jenner is one of guilty pleasure style inspirations (like me--trust me, the moment she wears something, the entire fashion industry blows it out), pair your edgier gladiator heels with a simple bodycon dress. I paired it with an olive curved hem bodycon dress (by the way, this is THE key silhouette of the year in tops and dresses) with knee-high front/back lace up corset heels. If styled wrong, the crazier gladiators (heels, especially) can make you look ridiculous. So go for a well-fitting solid basic dress, and try to avoid too much exposure up top. (For those of you not comfortable with the skin tight dresses, click here and here for my secret weapon that's more affordable than Spanx!)

3) The Girly Girl:

For a more subtle, easier and comfortable to wear day-time vibe, a swing/trapeze dress with flat gladiator sandals are a perfect match. The swing dress and gladiators combination can be worn morning, day, and night, and (office permitting), this can become an easy day to night outfit. If gladiator sandals don't really fit into your office environment like mine, keep the gladiators you want to wear in your bag or car (the lace up ones especially are versatile because they can fold down and you can bundle them up into a smaller size with a rubber band!) and swap them out with your flats at the end of the day! The loose flowy silhouette of the swing dress creates a harmony with the bandage effect of gladiator sandals.

4) The Goddess Diva:

Want to make a statement for your birthday dinner? Going out to a fancy dinner with a group of friends in Vegas for a bachelorette party? Or are you that lucky one that gets to go to a fancy movie premiere? Then this look is for you! Wearing statement shoes definitely makes the average passerby's eyes go directly to your legs, and for those of you who want to wear those sexy knee high gladiator heels without garnering too much attention, a sheer bottom maxi dress with slits can be the solution. It hides your statement pairs just enough so that people will know it's there, but not really, and when you walk, you tease the world with what shoes are peeping through underneath. To add a bit more of the goddess confidence in you, make sure you throw on a bold cuff bracelet (just a single simple one because overdoing your accessories can throw off the balance of your look) and put on your favorite red lipstick (my go to red is Armani 400!).

So just remember a few key tips before you pull out those crazy gladiator sandals (that you bought at the end of the summer last year at a crazy cheap price):
1) Brown/tan/beige tones are daytime friendly
2) Black gladiators give you an edgier look
3) Try to simplify the rest of your outfit when wearing heeled gladiators
4) Always be confident in what you wear, because your attitude reflects your appearance!

Speaking of crazy deals, there are still some CRAZY sales going on gladiator sandals! Grab a pair at under $35 before the season starts!
